Other Hawai'i Four Year Colleges

Each of the following colleges visit Hilo High campus several times a year and also represent at the yearly college fair.  Of course, these are private colleges which means that their tuition is generally higher...but, that also means that the financial aid which they offer will likely be higher as well.  Do not make the mistake of ruling out private colleges because the cost seems high.  And the smaller size of these colleges means that they tend to focus on specific programs to make the the best to be found in the state in that area.

As always, contact their representatives for information.

Located right next to UH Manoa, Chaminade is the only Catholic University in the Islands.  Chaminade has made it's mark in various ways over the years.

Their name will always come up when discussing NCAA basketball's greatest upset victories!  Back in the day, the little Silverswords took on the Goliath like Ralph Sampson and the number one ranked Virginia Caviliers.  Division II Chaminade is often credited with shaking Virginia's confidence so badly that they went on to lose to NC State, the eventual NCAA champion for the 1982-83 season.

More lately, Chaminade has made a big name for itself in the area of Forensic Science.  Do you see all of these CSI crime drama shows on TV these days?  One of their professors (You'll have to ask Dan Yoshitake which one) was involved in the creation of the first one of those shows and it took off and spawned many immitators.  But the point here is not TV shows, it's that little Chaminade now boosts a, perhaps the, top ranked Forensic Science program in the nation!

And remember, while Chaminade University is a Catholic institution, one does not have to be Catholic to attend.  Chaminade does not discriminate or force activites upon it's students.

The man to talk to about admission to Chaminade University is Dan Yoshitake.  He visits Hilo High every year and is always available by phone or email.  Here's a video clip Dan was kind enough to do for this site.

Located primarily in Kane'ohe, O'ahu, HPU has a lot to offer Hawai'i students.  While HPU has many liberal arts majors, some of the more outstanding majors include Marine Biology, Business majors and Nursing.

Marine Biology is a natural as they have access to Coconut Island (not the Hilo one, the Kane'ohe Bay one!) which is a huge natural lab.  Add to that a large research vessel from which students become directly involved in research related to their major.

Business is another area of strength for HPU.  Admissions Counselor, Sky Wilson, might have to correct me but I seem to recall that HPU took over the Honolulu Business College some years ago. I could be mistaken but I believe that is why HPU has classroom in downtown Honolulu, where big business takes place.  I also recall that HPU boasts a robust internship program in which their business students get real world experience even at the undergraduate level.  It's that kind of experience that give a graduate a leg up on the competition.

I did not know until a couple of years ago that HPU has the largest Nursing program in the state!  They must be doing something right.  They have classroom built exactly like hospital rooms in which students gain practical experience.

I didn't mention their Pre-Med or Pre-Law programs.  I recall their student's graduate school acceptance rates are quite high.  Again, HPU is doing something right again.

OK, that's enough.  I don't want to give the impression that HPU is paying me or something.  (They're not!)

Mr. Sky Wilson, HPU's admissions counselor who serves Hilo High, kindly said a few words on video at the last collge fair.  You will be able to tell from the sounds in the background that the fair was well attended.

To contact Sky by email click Mr. Sky Wilson, Hawai'i Pacific University or give him a call toll free at (808) 543-8070.  There is also a toll free number which is (866) CALL-HPU (I wish they would just list the numbers...)

I'll get more info on these as time allows...do a search and you'll find some more...some are pretty obscure though (no offense).  Here's a wikipedia list I found pretty fast.  It has links to so you can easily check them out.  Let me know if you find something good...thanks.
