Edline
Edline is a website commonly used among schools where grades, assignments, school events and more are posted so that students and their parents can see how they are doing. Over the past two or three years, Hilo High has gradually adopted Edline to the point at which most all of the teachers are using it on a frequent basis.
Parents can see their child's classroom assignments, scores on those assignments as well as the overall grades so long as they have been input by the teachers. And that's often a tall order to expect of our teachers, but most have proven up to the task.
Students and parents have separate accounts which need to be "activated". In the first days of school, activation codes were sent home with students. Many times these activation codes are lost or for whatever reason unused. Other times, the account is activated but over time, people forget their screen name and/or password.
If that is your situation, please contact your child's counselor. We have the ability to either find your access code if your account was never activated or reset your password if you have forgotten yours. Please don't hesitate to call if you need help.
Editorial note: Edline should not be allowed to take the place of discussion between child and parent! The connection between parent and child/child and parent is important. Students need to be accountable face to face with their Mom and Dad, Aunty and Uncle, Grandma and Grandpa, whatever the case may be. We should never allow a third or fourth party website to come between that.
However, we are dealing with teenagers here. While we need to give them the opportunity to tell us the truth, to use a Cold War term, we should "Trust but Verify". That is the value of Edline. Verification. And when students know that this is available and used, this is just that much more incentive to play it straight with Mom and Dad.
So parents, we need your counsel with your children today more than ever. Nothing on the internet is ever going to take the place of that!
